Your business information may appear on dozens of websites, directories, maps, and data platforms, but is it accurate everywhere?
In this episode of the 6-Minute Marketing Pod, we explain why business listings and local citations still matter for local visibility. You’ll learn what NAP consistency means, how outdated phone numbers, addresses, duplicate listings, and missing information can create problems, and why consistent business data helps both customers and search platforms better understand your company.
We also look at how listings support your Google Business Profile, local search presence, and even the growing world of AI-powered recommendations.
This episode is especially useful for local business owners who want to make sure their company is being represented accurately across the web and aren’t sure where incorrect or outdated information may be hiding.
I moved my shop one time, one time, and I still find the old address sitting on websites I have never heard of. How long ago was the move? Nine years, Maya. Nine.
SPEAKER_00Completely normal. Most owners have no idea how many places their information lives online. And none of them know how much of it is wrong.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the Six Minute Marketing Pod. Big strategies in bite-sized chunks. Brought to you by Lead Converter. I'm Jake Morgan and Maya Torres is here. She builds this stuff for a living.
SPEAKER_00Good to be back.
SPEAKER_01Today's episode goes with a blog post on the site about business listings and local citations. Plain English, Maya. What's a citation?
SPEAKER_00An online reference to your business. Name, address, phone number. Sometimes your website and ours. It lives on a directory or a mapping service or a review site.
SPEAKER_01So it's a listing.
SPEAKER_00It's a listing. Some are full profiles, some are three lines. Together, they're a network of information about you.
SPEAKER_01Here's my problem with that. I never created most of those.
SPEAKER_00You didn't. A lot of them get generated automatically from public information, third-party databases, or something another website published about you.
SPEAKER_01Which is why my old address is still floating around.
SPEAKER_00Right. And here's the part that gets people. Changing your phone number in one place does not fix it everywhere else. You updated your website, the internet did not get the memo.
SPEAKER_01So how does it get messy? I feel like I've been pretty stable.
SPEAKER_00Normal business things. You move, you change a number, you rebrand, you change your hours.
SPEAKER_01That's just running a business for 10 years.
SPEAKER_00That's all it is. And the old version stays online. Then you get duplicates, one current and one four years old.
SPEAKER_01There's a term for this in the blog, NAP.
SPEAKER_00Name, address, phone number. The three most important pieces of identifying information for a local business. NAP consistency means those match wherever they show up.
SPEAKER_01Just those three?
SPEAKER_00Website, category, and hours matter too, but name, address, phone is the core.
SPEAKER_01Point two, the blog splits listings into three buckets. Walk me through them.
SPEAKER_00Exact match. Everything is correct. Partial match, something is missing or outdated. Phone number is good, but the address is old. And bucket three, incorrect or missing, substantially wrong, or a duplicate, or you're not represented on that platform at all.
SPEAKER_01Let me push. Who is actually looking at some random directory?
SPEAKER_00Sometimes nobody, but look at it from the customer side. One phone number on Google, another on a directory, an old address somewhere else.
SPEAKER_01And they figure out which one is right?
SPEAKER_00Some do. Most will not investigate your business. They pick another company and you never hear about it.
SPEAKER_01That's the thing that always gets me. You never see the one you lost. Never.
SPEAKER_00No notifications saying four people couldn't confirm your hours. And the search engine side? Same idea. When your sources agree, the picture is clear. When they don't, there's uncertainty about which one is current.
SPEAKER_01So fix the listings, jump to the top of maps?
SPEAKER_00No, and I want to be straight about that. Cleaning up citations is not a magic ranking trick. It supports your profile, your website, and everything else you're doing locally.
SPEAKER_01I appreciate that. Point three, my real objection. Directories feel like 2009. Everybody uses Google.
SPEAKER_00Two answers. One, customers still use them, mapping platforms, review sites, social networks, and that information feeds the broader picture online. And two, industry directories. If you're an attorney or a contractor or a restaurant, being listed there reinforces what kind of business you actually are.
SPEAKER_01So the move is get on everything?
SPEAKER_00Opposite of the move. The goal isn't as many random websites as possible, it's accurate information on relevant established sources.
SPEAKER_01What about AI? People type who's a good plumber near me into a chatbot now.
SPEAKER_00They are, and no directory guarantees you show up in an AI recommendation. Anybody who says otherwise is selling something. But AI systems may use a lot of these same sources.
SPEAKER_01So same fundamentals as always?
SPEAKER_00Same fundamentals. The easier it is to tell who you are and what's current, the better off you are. And this one's never actually finished either. It can't be. Duplicates come back, old data reappears. The word in the blog is maintaining, not cleaning up once.
SPEAKER_01Alright, owner has a business to run and 20 minutes this week. One thing.
SPEAKER_00Search your business name plus your city and look past the first few results. Every place your name shows up, check two things. Is the phone number right? Is the address right?
SPEAKER_01That's it.
SPEAKER_00Not fixing them yet, just finding them. Just finding them. You cannot fix a footprint you've never looked at. If you moved or changed a number in the last five years, you're going to find something.
SPEAKER_01So search my own name and write down anything wrong. 20 minutes.
SPEAKER_00You can, and it usually explains a few things.
SPEAKER_01Okay, we skipped plenty. The full blog post goes deeper on duplicates, listings management, how this connects to your Google Business profile, plus a long FAQ. It's on the site with this episode. Go read it.
SPEAKER_00And if you want to know how accurately your business shows up across the web instead of guessing, that's part of our free local visibility audit.
SPEAKER_01That's where you find the listings I don't even know exist.
SPEAKER_00That and everything else. You end up with your actual footprint instead of a guess.
SPEAKER_01Links in the description.
SPEAKER_00And if you know your information is scattered and you're never going to chase 40 directories, that's what Lead Converter does. We keep it consistent so you're not the one fixing it.
SPEAKER_01Which shoes most of us. Thanks, Maya. Thanks, Jake. This has been the Six Minute Marketing Pod. Go search your own business name, and we'll see you next time.
